Rank Local Web Design & SEO releases a free 12-step guide that any business owner can run this week, no agency required

FORT MYERS, Fla. & AUSTIN, Texas - Oct. 11, 2026 - PRLog -- Google doesn't rank the best business. It ranks the one it trusts most. According to Mark Cass, founder of Rank Local Web Design & SEO, most local businesses are quietly giving Google reasons to doubt them.

"Most local businesses have a website from one vendor, SEO from another, and directory listings someone set up years ago," said Cass. "Each piece looks fine on its own. But the business name is slightly different here, the address format changes there, and the services on the website don't match the Google profile. Google sees three stories and has to guess which one is true."

Cass compares it to a credit report. A lender trusts you more when every account tells the same story, and Google reads business information the same way. In his book, Rank Local: How Businesses Win On Google, he writes, "When Google guesses, it usually guesses wrong."

That idea drives Rank Local's new guide, How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: 12 Tactics That Actually Work. The guide breaks down the signals Google uses to choose the top three Maps results and shows owners which ones they can control.

The 15-Minute Google Maps Checkup

Cass recommends every owner start with four checks before spending a dollar on marketing.

First, check your primary category. Search for your main service, open the top three businesses, and note their primary category. If yours is broader, like "Contractor" instead of "Plumber," you may not even qualify for the searches that matter most.

Second, check your map pin. Open your profile in Google Maps and make sure the pin sits on your real location. A correct address does not guarantee a correct pin.

Third, check your hours. Industry surveys rank being open at the time of a search among the stronger Maps factors. Make sure your regular and holiday hours match the hours you actually keep.

Fourth, match your name, address, and phone everywhere. Compare your Google profile, your website, and your top listings like Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and Facebook. Fix old addresses, old phone numbers, and duplicate listings first.

"None of these checks cost a thing," said Cass. "But I see the same mistakes in nearly every audit I run. A wrong category or a mismatched phone number can quietly hold back a business that's doing everything else right."

Cass walks through all 12 tactics in a new episode of Rank Local's Fireside Chats, available on the Rank Local YouTube channel.

The checkup matters beyond Google Maps, too. AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews pull from the same websites, profiles, reviews, and listings to decide which businesses to recommend. When those sources agree, AI has a clear answer. When they don't, it picks someone else.

Owners who want a second set of eyes can request a free Rank Local Visibility Audit. The audit shows why competitors are chosen ahead of a business across Google Search, Google Maps, and AI search, and what to fix first.
