New capability combines Lyntris Dragonflight autonomy with Robinson Unmanned’s SPARTAN unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to enable precision 3D formation flight

Lyntris Inc. (NYSE: LYNX), a defense technology company delivering sense-to-act connectivity solutions for the modern, connected battlespace, today announced a $6.48 million expansion of its Maritime Tactical Command and Control (MTC2) contract with the U.S. Navy to develop a precision formation flight capability—where Lyntris’ autonomy technology would be combined with Robinson Unmanned’s SPARTAN unmanned aircraft.

Lyntris plans to integrate its Dragonflight autonomy with Robinson Unmanned’s SPARTAN unmanned aircraft, pictured, to enable precision three-dimensional formation flight for the U.S. Navy.

Supported jointly by Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Mission Systems and PAE Robotic and Autonomous Systems, the contract would extend Lyntris’ Navy portfolio from maritime command and control into autonomous unmanned aircraft, with the expectation of enabling small UAS fleets to establish, hold and adapt deliberate geometries in three dimensions.

Lyntris is meeting the Navy’s requirement with Dragonflight, its existing swarm autonomy product, which provides the distributed autonomy that enables aircraft to coordinate as a team. New precision formation capabilities will extend Dragonflight to establish and maintain three-dimensional geometries, while Robinson Unmanned’s SPARTAN coaxial unmanned aircraft would provide the initial aircraft platform.

“Our teams have supported the Navy’s command and control mission since 2000, and that relationship and long-term expertise opened the door to this work,” said Daniel Gelyana, Executive Vice President of Global C2 at Lyntris. “Dragonflight gives the Navy a mature product to build on, and the precision formation capability we’re adding will carry across services and missions.”

Precision formations allow groups of autonomous aircraft to function as coordinated mission elements rather than individual vehicles. Depending on configuration and payload, different geometries can support distributed sensing, communications relay, defensive screening, deception and protection of higher-value platforms. The capability is designed for remote, austere operations where aircraft may need to maintain coordinated behavior through changing conditions and degraded communications.

Robinson Unmanned’s SPARTAN would bring an aviation-grade, MOSA (Modular Open Systems Approach)-ready Group 2 platform to the Navy’s development of coordinated autonomous UAS capabilities. Its compact coaxial architecture combines endurance and payload capacity with rugged, all-weather performance, while its modular, open design supports rapid integration of advanced autonomy, sensors, communications and mission payloads as operational requirements evolve.

“The operational value of an unmanned aircraft is increasingly defined by how effectively it can operate as part of the larger force,” said Paul Fermo, President of Robinson Unmanned. “SPARTAN’s open, modular architecture was designed to accommodate new capabilities without locking the aircraft into a single mission. Pairing it with Lyntris’ Dragonflight demonstrates how that adaptability can support coordinated operations across complex, distributed mission environments.”

Lyntris and Robinson Unmanned plan to demonstrate the capability later this year.
